# Photo credits

The fifteen photographs on the city editorial pages (Marrakech, Merzouga, Chefchaouen).
All come from Wikimedia Commons. Each image was encoded to WebP from the Commons source file
(never re-encoded from a WebP that had already been converted), quality 78, maximum width 1200 px,
**with no upscaling**.

The **Attribution** column states whether the licence requires a credit. Where it reads `Yes`, the
credit is carried by a **credit line at the foot of the article**, naming the author and the licence:
that is the practice across the six articles, and the decision taken. CC0 and public-domain images
require no credit. **This file is the register**: it carries, image by image, the file, the author,
the licence, the source page and the title of the work on Commons — the detail a foot-of-article
credit line cannot hold.

The 6 images that need no attribution may be published without credit. The 9 CC BY images require
one, carried by the credit line at the foot of the article.

## What the practice needed to strengthen

The foot-of-article credit line names the author and the licence, but it carried **neither the licence
URI nor the title of the work** — which CC BY asks for "to the extent reasonably practicable" — and it
did not link back to this register. That was the one real weakness of the practice against the
licence. It was closed on 17 September 2026:

- the **licence names** in the six articles are links to their Creative Commons page;
- each credit line **links back to this register**, `/blog-media/CREDITS.md`, which carries the title of
  the work and the source page image by image.

## Note on the location of two images

The file names describe what the photograph shows, without asserting a location the image does not
establish:

- `public/blog-media/merzouga/4-ziz-valley.webp`: the Ziz valley, categorised "Ouled Chaker" on Commons
  (about 120 km from Merzouga). The caption must not present it as taken at Merzouga.
- `public/blog-media/merzouga/2-camel-caravan.webp`: a generic Saharan silhouette; its attachment to
  Merzouga rests on a Commons category alone. The caption must not assert it.
